Tainted cards were introduced with Mists of Bilehall and appeared again in The Chains that Rust.

During quests or the campaign in either of those expansion, the heroes use a new type of card: Tainted cards.

Tainted cards represent the corruption that afflicts the heroes as they linger in the Mistlands.

At the start of each quest, the overlord shuffles the Tainted cards together and deals 1 card to each hero,

placing it facedown near each hero’s Hero sheet. No player should know which card has been dealt to any hero.

The overlord places the remaining cards aside. While a hero has a Tainted card in his play area, apply +2 to that hero’s Health.

When a hero with a facedown Tainted card is defeated, he flips that card faceup.

That hero is then affected by that card until the end of the quest or a game effect flips it facedown again.

FAQ
{{QA
|question_1 = Can a tainted hero stand himself up?
|question_source_1 = https://community.fantasyflightgames.com/topic/205760-tainted-question/
|answer_1 = A tainted hero cannot stand themselves up, as by definition this would be recovering hearts from a tainted source. Keep in mind that there IS an exception for heroic feats, so a character like Orkell the Swift is able to revive himself with his feat, and a tainted Avric Albright would be able to revive knocked out heroes through the use of his heroic healing feat.

|question_2 = I looked around and couldn't find an answer, but my group and I have been discussing the repercussions of the new taint cards from Mists of Bilehall. The first thing I thought when I read them was that I'd like to start using them with our current Nerekhall campaign because they seem to give back some power to the overlord because power creep has really been favoring heroes over the various expansions. My friend thinks they are too strong though because of how he reads the effect. Which leads me to my question:
|question_source_2 = https://community.fantasyflightgames.com/topic/205760-tainted-question/
|answer_2 = While you can house rule as you like, it is important to note that tainted cards are not intended to be used outside of Mists of Bilehall. Using them in Nerekhall is not intended because the quests are not designed to end if all heroes are KO.
An ancient city full of peril and mystery awaits in the ruins of Sudanya, a lost civilization on the edges of Terrinoth. Horrid creatures haunt the heroes’ every step, but powerful allies will guide them through the twisting maze of wilderness and broken cityscape.

Dreams of fortune and glory, untamed lands, and old mysteries have brought you to the edges of Terrinoth, near to the ruined city of Sudanya. Little is known of this place and its people, but tales and legends give naught but high allure to the seasoned adventurer. A dark omen shrouds your steps when you first discover the scattered remains of a Dunwarr expedition to these lands. Dead and burned, the bodies of these explorers transform to caution what was once a sense of excitement. Your destination of the Pylia Caravan, formed into an encampment for several weeks of local trade, lies not far on the road ahead. The expedition’s fate forces you to recall many dark rumors regarding the mysterious city. Sinister forces, terrible magic, and a deep seed of evil led to Sudanya’s downfall, or so it is said. Will you unlock the secrets of the forgotten city, or will this grisly scene prove an ominous sign of things to come...?

Some spaces on the map have a terrain type as defined by the color-coded line around the space or spaces. These spaces have effects on gameplay as listed below. Sometimes a colored line will surround multiple spaces. All spaces surrounded by a colored line follow the rules for that terrain type. Examples of the artwork are also listed below. Many map tiles also feature artwork that does not directly affect gameplay. All spaces on a map tile that are not surrounded by a specific colored line as listed here are treated as normal spaces regardless of the artwork.

Obstacles
Water
Water spaces are defined by a blue line surrounding them. A space containing water costs two movement points to enter (instead of the normal cost of one). Any figure entering a water space must spend two movement points to enter or it cannot enter that space. When a large monster ends its movement adjacent to a water space, it may freely place its base in the water spaces without suffering any movement penalty.

Pit
Pit spaces are defined by a green line surrounding them. Each time a figure enters a pit space, that figure suffers two damage. A figure in a pit space cannot spend movement points. Other game effects that move a figure a number of spaces or place a figure in a different space without spending movement points can be used to exit a pit space. A figure in a pit space only has line of sight to adjacent figures, and only figures adjacent to a pit space have line of sight to a figure in that pit space. As an action, a figure in a pit space may remove his figure from the map and place it in an adjacent empty space; if there is no adjacent empty space, the figure cannot perform this action. Large monsters suffer the effects of entering and being in a pit space only if their movement ends or is interrupted so that each space they occupy is a pit space.

Lava
Lava spaces are defined by a yellow line surrounding them. A figure entering a space containing lava immediately suffers one damage. Any figure that ends its turn in a lava space is immediately defeated. Heroes that are defeated in this way place their hero token in the nearest empty space (from where they were defeated) that does not contain lava. A large monster is immediately defeated only if all spaces it occupies are lava spaces.

Hazard
Hazard spaces are defined by a yellow line surrounding them. Hazard spaces follow the same rules as lava spaces. Any effect or ability that applies to lava spaces applies to hazard spaces, and any effect or ability that applies to hazard spaces applies to lava spaces.

Sludge
Sludge spaces are defined by an orange line surrounding them. Like water spaces, a figure moving into a sludge space must spend 1 additional movement point or it cannot enter that space. Additionally, when a figure starts its turn or activation so that each space it occupies is a sludge space, its Speed is considered to be 1 and cannot be increased above 1 until the end of that turn or activation.

Crumbling Terrain
A space that contains crumbling terrain loses all other terrain types except for obstacles. Each time a hero enters a space that contains crumbling terrain, that hero may test Knowledge or Awareness, his choice. If he fails or chooses to not test, he removes that crumbling terrain token from the map and suffers the effects of the other terrain in that space as normal; if the revealed terrain requires 1 additional movement point to enter, that hero suffers 1 Fatigue instead. If a figure is in a space that contains crumbling terrain, other figures cannot enter that space.

Elevation
Elevation is represented by a dotted red line along
the edge of certain spaces. These lines, also known
as elevation lines, block movement but not line
of sight. A figure cannot move across an elevation
line, but it can trace line of sight over one.
Adjacent spaces separated by an elevation line are still considered to
be adjacent. However, when a figure declares a Melee attack targeting a
figure on the opposite side of an elevation line, the target figure adds one
additional black defense die to its defense pool. If the attacking figure’s
attack has the Reach keyword, the target does not add the additional
black defense die to its defense pool.
When determining movement for large monsters, elevation lines block
movement. However, when ending or interrupting movement for
large monsters, the monster figure may be placed on spaces containing
elevation lines, as long as those spaces are empty. For example, a large
monster may occupy two empty spaces separated by an elevation line. A
figure with the “Fly” ability may move through elevation lines.
The Hexer, a “de-buffing” class capable of making overlord’s minions pay for every step they take. With an arsenal of plagues, curses, and other afflictions at his command, the Hexer is a grim reminder of that even the most objectionable forms of magic can be used in the name of good.

Elementalist is a class options for the Mage archetype. This class was first introduced in the Lost Legends expansion.

Starting equipment for the Elementalist are the Spire of Conflux and the Runeshard Cache, and the skill Elemental Focus.
The Elementalist is special compared to other classes because it uses the 4 Skills Blaze, Grasp, Tide and Gust which don't cost XP, but Elements (marked with the icon Element). All other skills of the class revolve around augmenting these 4 elemental skills.

Heretic is a class option for the Healer archetype, available to all Healer Heroes. It is part of the second round of Hybrid classes, introduced in Lost Legends. It hybridizes with any class belonging to the Mage archetype.

As a hybrid class, it gets a limited number of skills itself, and cannot gain the high-end skills of the class it hybridizes with. For example, were it to hybridize with the Hexer class, the Heretic would be able to purchase any class card of the Hexer class (as well as any class card of the Heretic class itself) except Plague Cloud or Accursed Arms, since either of those would cost 3 experience points.

The Heretics starting equipment is determined by the Mage class it hybridizes with. Like other hybrid classes, it only receives four skills on it's own, the rest of it's skills dependent on the class it hybridizes with.
